How large are the classes?

In practical classes, there is a maximum of 6 students to each tutor, working at any one time. This ensures that tutors develop good awareness of each student's needs and strengths.

We teach up to and beyond the standards required by ITEC, APNT and IFA (our chosen examination boards) whose qualifications are recognised nationally. Our teaching style emphasises our philosophy on active involvement, encouraging students to make a contribution and providing practical group work instead of formal lectures wherever possible.

All courses are accompanied by a comprehensive manual included in the course fee.

If you have never taken exams before, take heart! Many of our students are in this position and gain confidence from examination success for the first time in their lives. Regular testing, homework and one-to-one tuition to help individuals are part of our course policy, and the ratio of our classes, ensures that tutors develop good awareness of each student's needs and strengths. This can be as low as 1 tutor to 3 students.

Private lessons can also be arranged.

HOLISTIC MASSAGE COURSE FOR BEGINNERS - COURSE STRUCTURE

This workshop is ideal for those of you new to massage & wish to use massage with family and friends, it is also a good reminder for those of you who have completed a massage course in the past and would like a refresher.

The term "Holistic Massage" refers to a variety of techniques specifically designed to relax muscles by applying pressure to them against deeper muscles and bones, and rubbing in the same direction as the flow of blood returning to the heart. The main purpose of Holistic massage is to increase the oxygen flow in the blood and release toxins from the muscles.

Holistic massage shortens recovery time from muscular strain by flushing the tissues of lactic acid, uric acid, and other metabolic wastes. It increases circulation without increasing heart load. It stretches the ligaments and tendons keeping them supple and pliable. Holistic Massage also stimulates the skin and nervous system and soothes the nerves themselves at the same time. It reduces stress, both emotional and physical, and is suggested in a regular program for stress management. It also has many specific medical uses.

The holistic massage techniques you’ll learn during this workshop include Effleurage, Petrissage, and Tapotement (or percussion):

1. Effleurage: Gliding strokes with the palms, thumbs and/or fingertips

2. Petrissage: Kneading movements with the hands, thumbs and/or fingers

3. Tapotement: Hacking and Cupping

Holistic massage feels good and is relaxing and invigorating. It affects the nerves, muscles, glands, and circulation, while promoting health and well being.

The topics which are covered in this Holistic Massage Workshop are:

The benefits of Holistic Massage
Partial and total contraindications
Massage mediums
Classification of massage movements
Basic massage techniques and sequence
Massage aftercare

All students will have the techniques demonstrated to them, and each will both give and receive the massage. There is a maximum class size of four, ensuring one-to-one attention at all times. Comprehensive notes for students to take home are included in the workshop price, and each will receive a certificate of attendance signed by the tutor.

This is another of our very popular workshops and limited number of places available, it is advised to book early to avoid disappointment.

WHAT IS A CPD COURSE?

CPD is an abbreviation for Continuing Professional Development. These are basically short courses normally a day or 2 days, which carries a certain amount of points per hour of tutorial.

There are a certain amount of points required by the various bodies (IFPA, FHT etc) to ensure that members are up to date with various therapies. In turn, they can get insurance once they submit the 'Attendance Certificate' (received after attending courses recognised by the particular bodies insurance company)

For example Aromatherapists are required every 3 years to keep their training in massage up to date and will look for CPD courses to be able to do this.

If you have not done any other massage courses or do not require CPD points you are also able to take this course and if you check with your existing insurance company as many are happy to include these training courses to your insurance cover allowing you to use this with the general public and charge for it.

This makes this CPD course available for the professional massage therapist or for a complete beginner.

If you are a new therapist and wish to get details of a very good and competitive insurance company please feel free to contact me by phone or email.

Certificates / Assessment

Certificates are only given once students have demonstrated that they have absorbed the information presented during the day and after applying a satisfactory treatment observed by the tutor. To ensure that we act responsibly and carry out good practice, should the tutor feel that you would benefit from further training, certification may/will be held back and you will offered the opportunity/be asked to attend the next available course that has a space, which is offered free of charge. This is rare but we would not be responsible if we sent out students, when the tutor felt they were unsafe in any way, as a day to learn a therapy is only a short time and the standard must be high enough to enable them to issue you with a certificate. Our tutors are there to help, with small classes it is easy to absorb the techniques you are taught. There are no exams to sit for our 1 day courses only a practical assessment.

It does not matter which venue you to choose to attend as all tutors teach the same courses and offer the same content. What is CPD Points?

All our courses have been awarded CPD points (Continuing Professional Development). There are a certain amount of points required by the various bodies (IFPA, FHT etc) to ensure that members are up to date with various therapies. For example Aromatherapists are required every 3 years to keep their training in massage up to date and will look for CPD courses to be able to do this.

This makes this CPD course available for the professional massage therapist or for a complete beginner.

All courses you attend with Gateway, each student will receive an excellent full manual, which covers the course material and all aspects you have learnt on the day. This makes it easy for you to remember the routine without having to make notes during the day allowing you to have a practical day learning this wonderful new therapy.

SPORTS MASSAGE COURSE STRUCTURE & FAQ

So why study sports massage?

Just imagine you have a client like this…

A 30 year old Rugby Player comes to you with a bad pain in his right knee.

He really wants you to help him.

What do you do?

Do you turn him away?

Frustrating huh? Because without the right training, you may feel inadequate and just have to say you can’t help.

But there is an answer to this dilemma!

When you study sports massage with us, you will be 100% in control.

Here’s why…

Because you will be able to:

· Palpate the patella looking for inflammation (i.e. heat).

· Observe the area for possible swelling.

· Apply the Appley’s Test to test for a collateral ligament sprain or tear.

· Apply the Lachman’s Test to test for a cruciate ligament sprain or tear.

· Apply the Macmurray’s or Appley’s Compression Tests to test for meniscal tears.

Huh? Does that all sound like Latin to you?

Well, after just 15 days of training all this will make perfect sense to you, and you would be using those tests confidently and knowledgeable.

And when you know what’s wrong, you may treat the injury using a massage to quads, hamstrings, calf and patella to reduce swelling and fluid in the area.

The severity of the injury would of course also dictate the depth of the tissue work.

Easy right?

And there is more…

You would also be able to give home care advice.

You may give advice on how he can strengthen the leg muscle, the stretches he should apply and possibly how he should strap the area to protect it in future.

Isn’t it easy when you know how?

And guess what…

All the techniques you learn will apply to Joe Public who has twisted their ankle tripping down a stair or Joanne Public who has some RSI.

It’s not only for sports injuries. It applies to other injuries too!

Does this make sense?

You know, I am always amazed when I go and watch the sports massage students at the knowledge they have gained in such a short space of time. They know far more than I do about the joints, the causes and effects of injury, using orthopedic tests for injury, rehabilitation after injury including strapping and taping, cryotherapy, stretching and advanced deep tissue massage.

If you are interested in developing your skills and moving up a notch then sports massage may be for you.

The school's commitment to you

Training and qualifying need not be the end of your involvement with us. We are always available during office hours to answer your questions that arise after qualification. Every graduate receives a bi-annual newsletter, which details further skill-developing opportunities, gives news of developments in the complementary field and offers specialist workshops for qualified practitioners. We email news to graduates regularly, particularly regarding vacancies and opportunities. These networking opportunities are important, as are the friendships with like-minded people you will make during your training.

It plays an active role in setting and maintaining high standards in both the training and practice of Bodywork Practitioners. On completion of the Diploma graduates can benefit from insurance cover, professional representation, a register of graduates and a newsletter.
